*Next We are ready to start!
Updates! Jeff Corwin is our contractor! Cost projected to be less than $130,000. We are seeking pledges, gifts, loans! Fill in a pledge form! We are clearing out the hall to make room for the new! Stay tuned in...we're moving now!
The now approved Floor Plan of the "new" hall is posted HERE.
The SPECIAL PARISH MEETING on Sunday, March 23rd, Approved the Hall Alteration Plan! The vote was 41 in favor, 11 opposed, 1 abstention. We will update this page frequently as we progress along the construction path.
SUMMARY OF NEEDS Why we voted for a Parish Hall building project in the first place! 1) We need Church School rooms of a permanent nature, not "fold-up" rooms. We as a parish community were nearly unanimous in recognizing this need. Our present situation is frustrating and demoralizing to teachers, students and parents and does not contribute to church growth.
2) We need storage space to get tables, chairs, roasters, and a plethora of items out of our way and out of our sight! We need to utilize our beautiful cherry wood conference room for purposes other than storage and a hiding place for messes coming from other parts of the hall!
3) We need to modernize, beautify and make our kitchen more efficient and less labor intensive for the men and women who frequently work in there for the good of our Church.
WHY WE CHANGED OUR APPROACH.... We had presented a building plan at our Annual Parish Assembly last November that was approved by the congregation. Parishioners overwhelmingly agreed that our "needs" had to be addressed and directed the Building Committee and Parish Council to begin developing building specifications, cost estimates, etc. Parishioners entrusted the Committee and Council to make responsible and competent decisions of building design and affordable cost.
1) As the Committee and Council began gathering information and then getting bids for the project it stimulated members to look not only at the cost of the plan voted on at our Assembly (two bids came in at $250,000); but to also look at how best we could provide a parish hall for the benefit of ALL OUR PARISHIONERS and contribute to the building up of our Parish Life and Growth.
2) Our "re-evaluation" noted some significant facts that should have been very obvious all along. a. We were considering adding an educational wing to the hall, as necessary and essential as it is, at a substantial cost that would not benefit most of our parishioners. b. We were adding on to our hall so that we could preserve our present hall. Our present hall is basically utilized one time of the year for our July Dinner and 3 or 4 times for community dances. We seldom rent it out for weddings, etc. We are paying monies to heat it, maintain it, etc. for the benefit of non-church members and getting very little out of it ourselves! For their benefit we would be adding on to our hall and going into substantial short-term (hopefully!) debt and adding to our long-term energy and maintenance costs. All of this in difficult economic times. c. The worries about cost, upkeep, energy, etc. were already enough to take the joy out of the building project. We sensed that there was not any excitement or anticipation of a new building on the part of most parishioners. A major building project in a church should be JOY-FULL, not JOY-LESS!
3) We opened our eyes and saw that our hall was large― 5,000 square feet! We have room IN THE HALL to provide for most of our needs and still have a large open area for our coffee hours, parish dinners, etc. This includes a large area of wood floor. a. This would be a huge money savings, both short-term construction and long-term maintenance. This savings alone would more than make up for any possible losses in dinner revenues, dances, etc. (and that may not be the case, anyway). b. Monies would be freed to improve the hall facilities that we ALL can enjoy every Sunday.
...AND DECIDED TO RENOVATE AND ALTER OUR PRESENT HALL Members of the Building Committee were relieved of the big money burden that an addition to the hall would impose. But it wasn't just cost that inspired the Committee. Members became excited about a plan that was aimed to serve and please all of our parishioners―the elderly as well as families and their children― and a plan that would utilize the hall to build up parish life, community and worship. We envision a hall containing not just four dedicated Church School classrooms, a large storage area for tables, chairs, etc. and a modernized kitchen― but also a hall renewed with new lighting, painted walls, wainscoting, round tables and padded chairs, shelving and cabinet space, a music room and music storage, media facilities and more!
FINANCING THE HALL "ALTERATION" We have a substantial amount of money in our Building Fund and we will be saving well more than $100,000 by not building on to the hall― but we do not want to give you the impression that we can pay-in-cash for all the work we propose to do. We do believe, however, that parishioner's contributions to the Building Fund in initial cash gifts and/or in pledges over the next year or two will enable us to pay for this project without having to take out a large loan and perhaps no loan at all!
Our goal is to make our Parish Hall more than a hall ! We want it to work for us in building up our community life― Education, Charity, a Social Life that includes Relaxation and Entertainment, WORSHIP and PRAYER―
...for the building up of Christ's Body, of which you are a member.
