Photos and update posted January, 2012. Clean Water for Families in the Philippines The Bio-Sand Water Filter Project Two parishioners, Tom Moutsos and his wife Cara, served for two years in the Philippines with the Peace Corps. One of their projects involved teaching a group of young people how to make bio-sand water filters. The project developed into a small business run by the youth with the help of Dr. Dabu of the Rotary Club. The filters are made available to local families to provide them (and often their neighbors!) with clean water. The small amount of profit is put back into the business and provides income for the young workers. Tom and Cara, upon returning to the parish, gave an informative and inspirational presentation of their Peace Corps experiences in the Philippines. Sts. Peter and Paul parishioners responded by sending monies to the Pag-Asa Youth Association to enable them to make more of the filters. We have continued to aid the project since our first "investment" in 2008. Tom and Cara are presently living in California with their twins, Zenobia and Spero, who were born after their return to the States. They are keeping in regular contact with the Pag-Asa Youth Association. See below for photos and e-mail received in December, 2011. Our last investment was in November of 2011. The return on investment has been exceptional!
Below are latest updates on our investments.
Transporting filter on motorbike. Family receiving a filter in Tambo Pamplona Hello Father Dennis, Merry Christmas! I hope you and your family are all well. Maricel sent me these attached photos. They used the money from Ss. P and P immediately to get to work and make filters. I thought she had forwarded the pictures to you but Ruth told me she hasn't seen them. I think Maricel wanted to finish the report before she emailed you but they are having trouble with their computer. It is broken and too expensive to get fixed so they have to wait to use the computers at the municipal hall and it sounds like that never happens. Anyway, they are extremely grateful, as always and you can see from the beneficiaries that the filters are definitely needed. Many blessings for a happy New Year of 2012! Love, Cara and Tom Moutsos
